On Sunday, April 19, Symphony Parnassus takes the stage at the Taube Atrium Theater with a Spring Concert that moves from vibrant dance rhythms to intimate conversation to sweeping dramatic storytelling. The concert opens with Arturo Márquez's Danzón No. 2, the irresistibly rhythmic 1994 work rooted in the danzón — a dance form with Cuban origins that took deep hold in Mexican culture. The centerpiece is a rare opportunity: Saint-Saëns's La muse et le poète, Op. 132, performed by the father-son duo of violinist Stefan Hersh and cellist Alexander Hersh. Written in 1910, this single-movement work for violin, cello, and orchestra is — in the composer's own words — "a conversation between the two instruments instead of a debate between two virtuosos." Bay Area audiences will remember Alexander from his 2019 appearance with Symphony Parnassus; this time he is joined on stage by his father, making for a pairing both musically and personally meaningful. The program concludes with Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Suite No. 2, drawn from his landmark 1935 ballet — music of extraordinary color and drama. Stephen Paulson conducts. Tickets are available online in advance or at the door beginning at 2:00 PM.
