Symphony Parnassus closes the season with a program that brings together a captivating new work, Beethoven's beloved Violin Concerto, and Shostakovich's wittiest symphony. Max Marcus opens the afternoon with Incantations, a recent work that casts its spell over the orchestra. Young violinist Ava Pakiam then takes on Beethoven's Violin Concerto—one of the repertoire's most beloved works, full of soaring melodies and virtuosic challenges. The program wraps up with Shostakovich's Symphony No. 9, a symphony that caught everyone off guard in 1945 when Stalin expected triumph and instead got irony. Join us May 31 at 3pm at San Francisco Conservatory of Music for an afternoon of mystery, beauty, and wit.
