Symphony Parnassus encompasses the talents of musicians from
the Bay Area community. Originally called the UCSF Orchestra,
it was founded in 1989 by Jonathan Davis, then a graduate student
in Biophysics. Symphony Parnassus announced the appointment
of Stephen Paulson as its Music Director
in 1998.
The community's enthusiastic response to Symphony Parnassus
has been more than encouraging--from a small rehearsal hall
in a church and concerts in Millberry Gymnasium to major concert
halls in San Francisco (including Herbst Theatre, Masonic Auditorium,
Hellman Hall and the Palace of Fine Arts) with guest artists
including the late Rudolf Nureyev, jazz saxophonist John Handy, Lisa Vroman, Robin Sutherland, Hannah Tarley, Teddy Abrams, Geraldine Walther, William Bennett and other SF musicians. Symphony
Parnassus is a unique and vital part of the Bay Area's artistic
and cultural environment.
